The Eternal And Amazing Story Construction Of Motion Pictures
Do you love movies? Most people do. It never ceases to amaze people that year after year, Hollywood produces amazing blockbusters. They use ideas from all over the place to make movies. From novels, from comic books, and even from scratch. Yet all these blockbusters have something in common. A structure that is as old as humanity itself.
There was a groundbreaking book written by mythologist Joseph Campbell called “The Power Of Myth. In it he described how the mythical stories of almost every culture around the world share the same basic pattern. And if you compare this simple pattern to most blockbusters today, you’ll find they are very similar.
They all start out with a normal, everyday person, just like you, minding their own business. Life is comfortable and boring. They wish there was something more to life. Then something happens that grabs them out of their boring life and forces them on some type of journey.
After they begin their journey, they realize that they can’t handle this alone. They need to make new friends, and create alliances with people they didn’t even know existed. Once the group is formed, and the alliances are forged, they are ready for the next stage.
The next step is that they have to face some adversary. Some evil prince, or dark lord, or even an intangible part of themselves. But face it they must. In order to do so, they must learn or acquire new skills. Often times they come into possession of some special tool or weapon.
Naturally, the main focal point is the battle between the hero and the villain. This is always the climax of the story. The hero usually wins, but sometimes the hero dies in the process. If the hero lives, then they go home a changed person, and everybody recognizes them for their new talents.
After the final battle, when the hero returns home, he or she is recognized as a savior of the group. This group is sometimes a village, or a city, but sometimes the whole of mankind.
