The Best Female Vocalists In The World Of Indie Rock
Female singers have a big place in today’s music world. This is a great thing, as the diversity in music has thrived during the past few decades. Many of today’s most successful music artists are females.
My favorite genre of music is indie rock, and there’s no shortage of female talent here. There are some great artists with a knack for writing songs and singing them, and I’ve been fortunate to enjoy many of them.
This article is going to focus on a few of the biggest female talents in indie rock music today, with their vocals being the deciding factor in who makes the list. While there are dozens I could easily list here, I’m going to limit this article to my favorite four.
If you’ve never heard Regina Spektor’s music, I envy you. I can remember being moved the first time I heard one of her songs a few years ago, and I immediately bought her album.
Spektor has a chilling voice that truly makes her music sound that much better. Many artists have paired up with her, simply for the fact that her voice is incredible.
If you haven’t heard of Chan Marshall, perhaps you’ve heard of Cat Power. Marshall goes by Cat Power as a stage name, and she’s sat atop the indie charts for many years since becoming popular earlier this decade. Power writes original compositions, in addition to covering many classic songs.
An older singer who makes this list is Sharon Jones, though her music is anything but old. In an unlikely twist, she’s probably more popular now (in her 50s) than ever before, thanks to the combination of Jones and the Dap Kings. Her music could be compared to some of the best Motown jams from the 60s and 70s.
Gaining steam is Shara Worden, also known as My Brightest Diamond. She has a pristine voice, and while her original work doesn’t always highlight it, some of her cover songs certainly do. Worden has one of the best voices around.
