Death On The Nile is undoubtedly one of Agatha Christies most loved novels and it was the first of the author’s films I came across. The 1978 version saw Peter Ustinov star as the fictional, Belgium investigator Hercule Poirot and his travelling companion Colonel Race who was played by David Niven.

As the title suggests, the movie is set on the River Nile in Egypt. When a young heiress is murdered, Poirot is called upon to solve the crime. The motion picture is set aboard the Nile River boat the SS Cataract with visits at a number of Egypt’s most widely known historical attractions.

She follows the pair from the Pyramids in Cairo down to the Nile and boards the SS Cataract.

Linnet Doyle was the first victim and as Poirot began to look into, the different suspects motives started to be discovered. Her prized pendant was coveted by Mrs van Schuyler, Salome Otterbourne faced a law suit from Doyle over something she had published, Doyle had refused her maid the dowry she had promised and there were other people too.

As the vessel sailed along the river stopping at spots such as the Temple of Karnak, Aswan and the Temple of Abu Simbel, other travellers were also being murdered. Eventually Poirot works out the clues and the murderers are unmasked. Simon Doyle had married Linnet to gain access to her wealth. With her out of the way, Simon would be free to marry his true love, Jacqueline.

The deaths don’t end here as in desperation, Jacqueline first of all shoots Simon followed by herself instead of face justice. Originally written in the 1930s, the tale is a Christie classic. Despite the fact that a number of the trips are improbable (such as cruising from Karnak to Abu Simbel in an afternoon), this doesn’t take away from the video whatsoever. Danny Boyle has quickly become one of the premier directors in all of Hollywood. Most of his movies are quite simply, fantastic and all of them are worth seeing. The Beach is another tremendous film from director Danny Boyle. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as a young traveler who embarks upon a paradise island off the coast of Thailand. This is a great film depicting one of the most beautiful places in the world.

One movie that I went into, not knowing what to expect, was Sunshine. This movie takes place in a world where the sun is slowly dying, and therefore a team of scientist astronauts is sent to detonate a bomb in the sun’s core, in order to reignite it. This movie is like Armageddon, but better.

Another movie that I would definitely include on this list is Heat. This is one of the greatest films of the 1990s and stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, one of the few films that can say that. Val Kilmer also plays a big role in this film.

Public Enemies is one of his more recent movies, and also happens to be one of his best. In this movie Johnny Depp stars as John Dillinger, one of the most wanted gangsters of all time. Christian Bale stars as the FBI agent in charge of capturing him.

I would be remiss to create a list of the best Michael Mann movies of his career without giving some love to The Insider. I can’t decide who was better in this movie, Al Pacino or Russell Crowe. In the end, it doesn’t matter because they were both great!

The last movie to make the cut for me is Collateral. This movie stars Tom Cruise as the villain for one of the few times in his career. A fresh-off-the-Oscar Jamie Foxx also stars in this suspenseful film.

While it wasn’t as good as the original, I thoroughly enjoyed Tim Burton’s remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. At first I wasn’t sure about them casting Johnny Depp as the part of Willy Wonka, but in the end, I think he pulled it off.

Another film that I have incredibly fond memories of is Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. This movie stars Paul Reubens as his most famous character, Pee-wee Herman, who travels across America in search of his missing bike. It is a better film than the plot would lead you to believe. It was all down hill for Reubens after this 1985 classic, but it is still a great film regardless of the actor’s future path.

Another movie that I feel is worthy of mentioning on this list is Planet of the Apes. It makes too much sense that Tim Burton was in charge of directing this Charlton Heston remake, which starred Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter, and Michael Clark Duncan.

As it stands, this is my personal Tim Burton best-of list. I look forward to seeing what he comes out with next, but would love to see him part ways with Johnny Depp.

Rushmore is another film that is definitely worthy of discussion. Like many of Wes Anderson’s movies, this film stars Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson and Bill Murray. Clearly there is some camaraderie here that goes way past making a movie together.

The Royal Tenenbaums is my personal favorite Wes Anderson film. While all his movies tend to have pretty good casts, this one I think has the best cast of all. Gene Hackman, Angelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bill Murray and Daniel Glover star in this film.

Last but not least is Mr. Anderson’s first film of all, Bottle Rocket. Anderson and Owen Wilson wrote this film together, and it was clear after this movie that Anderson had an incredibly promising career ahead of him.

The final film that deserves to be mentioned is Platoon. This movie is one of the all time great war films, up there along with Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and Saving Private Ryan, in my honest opinion.
