Michael Jordan

Air Jordan’s first comeback was hugely successful, earning him three more championship rings with the Chicago Bulls. Also, everyone saw the out-of-this-world brilliance he displayed against Byron Russell in the final seconds in Game 6 of the NBA finals against Utah Jazz. That was indeed the perfect and almost godly way to voluntarily end his career, but then he decided to make a second comeback in 2001 with the Washington Wizards. Throughout the two seasons he played with the club, it was painful to watch Jordan glued to the court, unable to fly like he used to. Don’t be mistaken, he still managed to pull a few surprises like scoring 43 points in an NBA game and making the All-Star cut at age 40. But seeing him being outrun, pushed over, and getting blocked by younger but lesser known players made many fans cringe and feel embarrassed for the living legend. He may be the “greatest of all time”, but he chose to add embarrassing moments in his biography rather than go down in history with a luminous conclusion to his career. The boxer formerly known as Cassius Clay decided to make a comeback in 1980 only to lose two consecutive fights against Larry Holmes and a then-unknown boxer named Trevor Berbick. Spud Webb’s height may not be that big but his heart certainly is. Anthony “Spud” Webb was born in Dallas, Texas on July 13, 1963. He was part of a large family and has five brothers and sisters. Spud was interested in basketball as a young kid and even though he was much smaller than his peers, he dreamed of playing in the NBA. One big advantage that Spud Webb always had over his competitors was his quickness and large vertical leap.

Even though Spud Webb was quick and could dunk the ball, he was constantly overlooked by his coaches growing up. When he tried out for his junior high school team, he was told to sit in the stands because he was too small. Although this was a disappointment he was determined not to let his height stand in his way of his dreams. One day Spud finally convinced his coach to let him play and he scored 20 points in his first game.

Webb attended Wilmer-Hutchins High School but was not able to make the varsity team because he was too small. He was so disappointed that he even thought about quitting, but instead practiced even harder. Spud would finally make the varsity team and he excelled, averaging 26 points per game. During his senior year, standing at only 5 feet 6 inches Spud made his first dunk in a school game.

He was also named Player of the Year and was selected to the All-State team. Despite his incredible high school accomplishments, because of his height, Spud was not heavily recruited at the college level. Spud Webb began his college career at Midland Junior College and led his team to the junior college national title in 1982. His excellent performance at the junior college level drew national attention when an article was written about him in Sports Illustrated.

Not long after this, North Carolina State assistant coach Tom Abatemarco watched Spud play at his junior college in Texas. He suggested to head coach, Jim Valvano, that Webb should visit the campus on a recruiting trip. As the story goes, the two coaches went to the airport to meet him. When a little guy came walking towards the coaches, Valvano supposedly said to Abatemarco, “If that’s Spud Webb you’re fired.” During the visit Valvano was so impressed with Spud that he offered him a scholarship. Spud went on to lead the team to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Spud had a big setback yet again when he was not chosen in the NBA draft because of his height. He continued to work on his game and in 1985 he met his goal and was chosen by the Pistons in the fourth round. Unfortunately, he would be cut from the team later that year.

Soon after, he was given an opportunity to tryout for the Atlanta Hawks and the rest was history. Spud went on to average over 10 points and five assists per game throughout his career. His most well known moment was in 1986 at the All-Star Slam Dunk Championship where he beat out Dominique Wilkins and Michael Jordan to take the title.

Spud Webb retired from basketball in 1997 and now spends his time with his business adventures and playing golf. One thing can be said for sure: Spud Webb’s height may not be very big but his heart and determination definitely are.

Released just last year, Sugar is a must see for any fan of baseball. This film gives a truthful look at the journey of a dominant player from the Dominican Republic, who has big dreams, but no clue of the journey he will have to go on to reach the Pros.

Another film that must be mentioned is The Sandlot. You can ask any American under the age of 30 who Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez is, and they will be able to tell you. The Sandlot is an incredibly important baseball film.

Walter Mathau stars in the original Bad News Bears, which was recently remade with Billy Bob Thornton reprising the role of Mr Buttermaker, an alcoholic coach who takes on an unenthusiastic group of little league baseball players.

Field of Dreams remains one of Kevin Costner’s greatest films to this day. True, he hasn’t done much recently, but even if he did my statement would hold true! This movie encapsulates the spirit of American baseball and puts it into film.

When it comes to sports films, there are a few things that separate the good ones from the great ones. Sure, cheesy motivational music and 80s style montages never hurt, but a truly great sports film often has elements of truth and inspiration. Over the past 10 years, we have been subject to some pretty amazing sports movies.

Here is my list of what I consider to be the best sports films released over the past 10 years.

When it comes to great movies about football from the last 2000-2009, one would be foolish not to include Disney’s Remember The Titans on their list. The true story of the first racially integrated football team stars Denzel Washington and the always great Will Patton.

Another great football movie that I will have to include is The Blind Side. If have not seen The Blind Side yet, you should definitely do so soon. This movie is incredible. I will not give away details but it is a true story, based on the book of the same name and there is nothing not to like about this film.

Also based on a true story, and arguably one of the greatest moments in American sports history, is Miracle. Based on the 1984 Olympics at the height of the Cold War, a group of American college hockey players go up against the odds to meet the superior Russians in the finals. What plays out is quite frankly…a miracle.

One of my top 30 films of all time is Million Dollar Baby. I will not give anything away, but this is Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Hillary Swank at their finest. It is no surprise Hillary Swank walked away with the Academy Award for Best Actress with this film.

One other amazing sports film from this past decade was Sugar. If you have not seen it and are a fan of baseball, you should. It gives a truthful look into the world of Dominican baseball and the struggles of extremely talented kids to make it to the pros.

As it stands, this is the list. Hopefully the next decade will bring some great sports films as well.

The Orlando Magic have made it to the Eastern Conference finals the past two years, so they are another team that you should not bet against. They had the second best record in the league last year, next to the now defunct Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Oklahoma City Thunder is likely ready to make a splash. They were the #8 seed in the West last year and took the Lakers to 7 games. They will likely be much better this year.

These are just some of the teams that will be great next year. While some argue that the Heat will be too good next year, a lot of these teams are getting better and will be hungry.
